Page 1 of 3 Serienscheine notgeld with overprints
(hold mouse over image and see the reverse) The 2 pieces illustrated above, show 2 serienscheine overprints, one for 500m and the other for 1000m. Originally these pieces had face values of 50pf, but due to the hyper-inflation that was hitting the German economy, that original face value was worthless and was therefore overstamped with the higher value. These pieces were originally printed in the town of Lichtenstein-Callnberg and were dated 1.4.1921. The overprints would probably have been added in 1922. By overprinting the note, it saved printing more money and so saved on paper but it also made such original pieces more useful and necessary for the current time. Overprinted pieces are worth more, so all collectors should keep an eye out for them! Sometimes the overprint is not very easy to spot. (see note below from Weissensee, overprinted from 10pf to 100,000m and dated 15.9.1923 with a serial number of '249' on the reverse).

The next scan shows a note from a set of 5 pieces which all had an original face value of 50pf. In this example, the overprint increased the face value to 100,000,000,000m!!
