Notgeld sets in presentation envelopes

Occasionally, the notgeld collector will come across sets that are in envelopes. These were issued and sold to meet a demand in the collector market that had grown since 1914. These early years, where the designs tend to be plain and basic, were actually what fuelled the notgeld issues. There was a need for small change to allow people to go about their daily business. At the height of the notgeld 'boom', 1921, thousands of sets were being produced. Here though, the reason was the demand of the collector market and NOT a necessity of small change. Collectors like things that are different and in sets, so these presentation envelope sets were a good addition. Some are scarce and therefore have high catalogue prices. Many are fairly 'common' and can be bought for around 5 euros (empty!!)

I guess I have around 50 different envelope sets in my collection.

The wrapper or striefband in the bottom left of the picture is associated with the scarce set of 5 notgeld pieces, issued in Altenburg and catalogued as Lm.22. and is worth around 15 pounds sterling. (50 old DM)!
