Page 1 of 2 Notgeld sets in presentation envelopes
Occasionally, the notgeld collector will come across sets that are in envelopes. These were issued and sold to meet a demand in the collector market that had grown since 1914. These early years, where the designs tend to be plain and basic, were actually what fuelled the notgeld issues. Collectors saw them and liked them and so began to collector them. Originally, there was a need for small change to allow people to go about their daily business and the issues were fairly plain. At the height of the notgeld 'boom', 1921, thousands of more graphical and coloured 'sets' were being produced to feed the collector demand.
Collectors tend to like things that are different and things that are in sets, so these presentation envelope sets were a good addition for the notgeld collector market. Some are scarce and therefore have high catalogue prices. Many are fairly 'common' though and can be bought for around 5 euros (empty that is!!)
I guess I have around 50 different envelope sets in my collection.
The wrapper or 'striefband' in the bottom left of the picture is associated with the scarce set of 5 notgeld pieces, issued in Altenburg and catalogued as Lm.22 / Gr.Mehl.19 and is worth around 15-20 pounds sterling. (approx. 30 euros or 60 old DM)! There is a catalogue which lists these wrappers and envelopes. See under 'catalogues' in my website shop if you wish to purchase one. Although the prices in it are in 'old' Deutsch Marks, I just halve the catalogue price stated to get the rough value in euros.
